- Ask Them to Increase Upward Bound funding by $57 million!

Upward Bound Action Alert for December 9, 2010

Parents, Do You Want Your Child’s Upward Bound Program to Disappear a Year From Now?

TRIO Alumni, Staff & Students, Do You Want to See any TRIO Programs Disappear?

Unless Congress increases funding for Upward Bound when it takes action this week, that is exactly what will happen. Because your child’s Upward Bound program is funded by money that will expire in December 2011, Congress must increase Upward Bound funding by $57 million. Otherwise, your child’s program – along with nearly 200 others serving 12,000 students nationally – will be lost.

What can you do to prevent this from happening?

Three Simple Steps:

1.   On December 9, call BOTH of your Senators’ offices (list below)

2.   Ask to speak with the listed staff person.

3.   Leave the following message: “Tell the Senator to include a $57 million increase for Upward Bound in the Fiscal Year 2011 funding bill!”

Your Kentucky Senators are:

 Senator Mitch McConnell

(202) 224-2541

Education Aid: Andrea Liptak

 Senator Jim Bunning

(202) 224-4343

Education Aid: Kunal Pahwa

You may only get to speak to an aid or be able to leave a message on a machine - this is just as important as talking to your Senator!  You can also email or write your senators, but we're planning for a push of UB supporters to flood the offices of all senators on Capitol Hill on December 9th!

Please contact Kimberly Jones at the Council for Opportunity in Education at or (202) 347-7430 for more information.

If you live in another state, download the document below, which has contact information for the Senators that represent your state!
